SOME COGNITIVE EFFECTS OF HEAD INJURY:
by Craig Lock

“Compare it (your head) to a jelly in a bowl. The bowl is the skull – a strong, protective container – and the jelly (the brain) is nestled within. The skull is able to withstand many types of blows; but the brain is vulnerable to sudden swirling or rotating movements. Shake the bowl and see what happens to the jelly.”
– Dr Don Mackie, Emergency Specialist(in New Zealand)

Here are my notes from those books (in point form), which I apply every day in my “little” life…

Firstly …extreme FATIGUE
*
Wake up every morning feeling heavy-headed (very).
* fatigue – take frequent breaks and do the most demanding tasks first…even get exhausted reading a newspaper! So break the task into “bytes”…doing most of my reading “first thing” when I awaken early)

* in South Africa found telling stories very difficult – kept facts to a minimum. Write way better than I talk.
* muddled – making tea AND coffee for guests. Sugar, one two, milk??? Total confusion making for more than just myself. Ha ha (just ask my friends if it’s true – a clue – they make the drinks)! So I put one thing away at a time, then finish. Single-minded FOCUS.
Not observant.
Visio-spatial organisation
short-term and visual memory (visual overload)

I have the ideal job (at long last!). Very part-time and flexible, work in my own time just a few hours a day, take breaks when fatigued. Also (and most importantly) I do it totally my way (very hard in a “normal” environment). Info overload (and change) is a real problem, when other things are going on – groups (avoid that!), etc.
However, with motivation (great), determination and self discipline one can achieve wonders.

“An individual of forceful personality , with a high tolerance of frustration, showing drive, determination and great resilience, will win through in the end more successfully than someone of less robust temperament.”*
– Dr Frederick F Linge

* Also add motivation (high), perseverance (huge) and patience (great)

*
THE EFFECTS OF FATIGUE:
I wake up every morning feeling exhausted, as if I haven’t had a good night’s rest. ALWAYS. A bit light-headed too – no very HEAVY-headed. It’s hard to describe the feeling. I feel I could sleep for days, but force my self out of bed to do my daily tasks. However, the first 2-3 hours of the day are by far my best times for alertness and getting the most important tasks done (like sending out articles on the internet). Also get more tired as the day progresses and have gone to bed really early for most of my life. I need more rest and have to work my day around my “funny job(s)” – by taking frequent rests and walks during the day (“sleep-walking through life”, as dear M calls it). It’s not at all depression, just REAL FATIGUE – a “heavy headed” feeling, a bit like the “hung-over” feeling (not that I’ve had one for “moons” – thank goodness I don’t drink much… what I be like then… a total “zombie!”).

On reflection, my Lifegrow insurance job in Cape Town, South Africa was perfect for me… It was liason/marketing/PR. Worked few hours early am, then socialised just ‘cruisin around’. Only then I didn’t know then what I know now….and how well it suited me (doing it “totally my way!” – thanks Frank Sinatra). Thank goodness for the great people, who helped me to “success” (Nicola, Rethe, Tony and Ronnie). Then after “emigrating” everything, our entire worlds, came crashing down in Perth, Australia …and the real struggles began. Yet God can do the most amazing things, work miracles… by turning our deepest scars in to the most brilliant stars.

Now many many years later after that trauma my current position selling subscriptions for Sky TV (very part-time) here in a small provincial NZ city (“Sleepy Hollow”) suits me perfectly. Flexible hours working when I want out of the “corporate rat race” and doing it “totally my way” . I’ve been doing it very successfully for over three and a half years (five now, now over ten!). It’s my longest and best job in my entire “career” and I’m very happy here “Dropped out in Godzone” (the title of my second book, btw).
BE HAPPY too

“Success to others may be apparent in what you DO; but
significance, meaning and purpose lies, then reveals itself
in what you ARE and BECOME down the ‘river of life’ – how
and the spirit with which you face, then overcome the daily
obstacles, the frequent trials and tribulations along the
often rocky path-way of life’s magical and mysterious
journey.
Light your path brightly

About craig lock

www.craiglockbooks.com www.creativekiwis.com About the Author Craig has a 'passion' for writing books that tell stories about people doing positive things in this often so hard, sometimes unkind world, occasionally cruel, yet always amazing world - true stories that leave the reader feeling uplifted, empowered and hopefully even inspired. Craig Lock loves to encourage and empower people to be the best they can possibly be, and to create what they want in life. Craig has learnt plenty from the "school of life" (still "battered and bruised") and also from a few "hard knocks on the head". He is an extensive world traveller (on a "shoestring budget") and failed professional emigrater who has spent most of his life’s savings on airfares. He is still sliding down the razor blade of life on the beautiful undiscovered island that is New Zealand, somewhere near the bottom (rude!) of the world near Antarctica. There he talks to the 60 million sheep! Craig has been involved in the corporate world (life assurance) for "many moons". However, through a rather strange (and unique) set of circumstances and finding himself in a small town near the bottom of the world ...and with nothing else to do, he started writing. That was five years ago. Five published books later and having written another twenty manuscripts (now 300 + on widely differing subjects - well what else is there to do here?)... this is where Craig is in the "journey/adventure" that is life. Craig has run a run a successful creative writing course (not teaching sheep!) at the local Polytechnic. He was the author of (as far as we know) the first creative writing course on the internet. He has many varied interests and passions and is particularly interested in the field of psychology – studying the human mind and what makes different people "tick-tock grandfather clock". He is fascinated by the "overlap between psychology and the dimension of spirituality". One of his missions in life is helping people make the most of their hidden potential and so finding their niche in life... so that they are happy. Craig’s various books probably tell more about his rather "eventful" life best (no one could believe it!). He writes books with serious messages and themes, then as a contrast "rather crazy, wacky stuff"…to keep him sane here. As an ‘anonymouse’ person wrote: "All of us are born mad; some of us remain so." Well nothing else much happens in quiet provincial New Zealand, other than headlines like "Golf Ball Thrown at Policeman" and "Beach Toilet Closed for Season.". True! from http://www.selfgrowth.com/experts/craig_lock.html For Craig’s books see AMAZON at http://www.amazon.com/-/e/B005GGMAW4 ... but rather GO to www.creativekiwis.com All proceeds go to the needy and underprivileged… and a charity (most worthy-Bill and I) “When the writer is no more , the value of your purchase will soar! “ www.craigsquotes.wordpress.com “Together, one mind, one life (one small step at a time), let’s see how many people (and lives) we can encourage, impact, empower, enrich, uplift and perhaps even inspire to reach their fullest potentials…and strive for and perhaps one sunny day even achieve their wildest dreams.” PPS Don’t worry about the world ending today… as it’s already tomorrow in scenic and tranquil ‘little’ New Zealand

This is craig and this is a quick word of sincere thanks to you ALL. I came

across the following post from international best-selling author, Bryant

McGill on his Facebook page, which I felt “inspired” to share. Brant’s

writing summed up/put these thoughts far better than “lazy-bones” I ever

could have done, so am sharing these beautifully-written and heart-felt

sentiments in the same spirit (through copy and paste ( CONTROL C AND

can’t do that; however I do care that you take the time to read (and absorb)

what I’ve written and may even have commented. I do read as many

comments on my 200 + blogs as I can, but probably have missed countless

thoughts of yours, so have not replied. Sorry and thanks for the

    understanding.

just because I don’t respond to comments or messages that I am not paying

attention. I am paying attention and I am grateful.

I am a full-time writer, which means you are a very important part of my life.

“I wish you well on a rainy day
I wish you rainbows to brighten your day
To feel your quiet moments with a special kind of warmth
to remind you that happiness can happen
    when you least expect it.

I wish you rainbows to make you laugh and smile
to show you the simple beauty of life
and to give you the magic of dreams come true.

    I wish you rainbows
    I wish you well.”

    – Larry S. Chengges

”Since I can never see your face,
And never shake you by the hand,
I send my soul through time and space
To greet you. You will understand.”

    – James Elroy Flecker (1884-1915
